This book is the first to examine the activities, experience, cultural conflicts, and leadership of the black missionary movement before 1900. Based on primary sources--documents of mission agencies that sponsored the missionaries and writings of the black American missionaries who were sent to western, central, and southern Africa--it is an important study for understanding black history, American cultural and social history, church history, and African history.
