I thought I knew Christianity fairly well, so I was embarrassed that I did not know of the Desert Fathers. So, I read this book. Afterwards, I think I was better off not knowing about the Desert Fathers.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt, since|About the Author|Benedicta Ward is a reader in the history of early Christian spirituality at the Theology Faculty in Oxford. She has translated The Prayers and Meditations of St. Anselm for Penguin Classics.
